Babywearing 101

What Type of Babywearing Dad are You? | Ergobaby

If you are new parents who are, well, obviously new to this whole idea of babywearing, here is Babywearing 101 for you! Or.. if you are using a new baby carrier.. there are things you need to know and be aware too! Here are some vital Dos and Don’ts of babywearing, but do ensure that you read your carrier’s safety tips as well!

✔ Practice before you start!

Be sure to try out your carrier before you insert your baby in for the first time. Familiarize yourself with the buckles and straps. You can even practice with a teddy bear or a bag of rice just so you know how to handle your baby’s weight later. You know what they say.. practice makes perfect!

✔ Wear your baby high up

To improve your comfort, wear your baby high. The higher up on the body your baby is, the easier it will be! Do aim to place the carrier at belly button level and the closer it is to your body, the better it is for you. But ensure there are room for breathability. You don’t want to suffocate yourself!

✔ Give support to your baby

A newborn baby’s head always needs support. Whenever you are wearing your baby, always make sure you are supporting their head and keep them securely in the carrier especially when you lean down or bend over.

❌ Overdress your baby

Your closeness with your baby and body heat along with the carrier’s fabric will help to keep your baby warm at all times. Think about the clothes that your baby should be wearing when the weather gets warmer. You don’t want to stuff up or swaddle your baby inside excess fabrics! Do remember that the youngins have poor body heat regulation, hence remember to regularly check their abdomen, forehead, and neck.

❌ Let your baby’s legs dangle

Your baby could be at risk of contracting hips dysplasia if their legs dangle. To prevent that from occurring, kindly ensure that your baby is in frog stance where their bottom and hamstrings are supported by the carrier.

Just to let you cool parents know, we are having Babywearing Special on our website. Every day, starting today, you get to enjoy different deal on babywearing gears. This is the best time for you to get the carrier of your dreams! So be sure to check our website every day for the best deal! So, happy babywearing, folks!

Types of car seats and why it’s important to choose the right one

Original Author: Timothy Wee

Transporting infants and babies in cars is something that cannot be avoided and we as parents are lucky as there are many different types of car seats to choose from. With so many choices at our fingertips we often feel like it’s overwhelming choosing the correct car seat for our child. In this blog I would like to share the different types of car seats available on the market and why choosing the correct one is important.

1. Infant Car Seat

0e4895a65d0b56f9f972477b2154cb031539168336-nm_1024x1024

The infant car seat is ideal for those ages from 0-2 years old or until the baby reaches the weight limit of the seat. The car seat is also designed to be able to act as a carrier where you can carry your child outside the car. Infant car seats will not be able to carry children who pass the weight and age limit of the car seat so be sure to get a new one when your child gets older. You can buy one here.

2. Convertible Car Seat

ALD1012-700x700

If you’re someone who wants to get more out of your car seat, a convertible car seat would be ideal for you. A convertible car seat can support children from 0-3 years old for rear facing position but front facing after 3 years old. As parents you do not need to buy a new car seat as the baby grows and can reuse the same one. On the down side, a convertible car seat isn’t as portable as an infant car seat and cannot be used as a baby carrier. A convertible car seat is also more bulky and bigger but some may see it as a good thing as it adds extra protection. You can buy one here.

3. 3-in-1 Car Seat

ev906f-jbrd-b

A 3-in-1 car seat is similar to a convertible one but it also has a booster seat functionality. Those of you who would opt for a 3-in-1 car seat will be able to use this seat as your child grows and do not need to buy a new one, perfect for those looking to save some money. You can buy one here.

4. Booster Car Seat

Travel-Portable-Baby-Booster-Car-Seats-Child-Car-Increased-Seat-Pad-Booster-Cushion-Kids-Dining-Chair.jpg_640x640q70

The Booster Car Seat is ideal for children who are old enough to not need the extra bells and whistles of the other 3 car seats. The car seat comes forward facing only and the minimum weight of children for this car seat is around 13-18 kg depending on the model. This kind of car seat should not be bought buy parents with new born babies as it does not come with extra support that infants require. This kind of car seat can help children transition from a car seat to sitting without one. Depending on the model it may come with its own belt but children can also use the car’s safety belt depending on their preference. You can buy one here.

Importance of choosing the type of car seat

Each type of car seat comes with its own set of pros and cons that depend on the stage of growth of your child. As parents we must choose wisely which car seat is ideal for your child as car seats are important when transporting children. Child safety is important and choosing a car seat that provides the optimum safety for your child. Using infant car seats on heavier children may not be ideal as it does not provide the support and protection an older child needs. Moreover, children needs to feel comfortable in their car seat so they don’t feel annoyed and cry for your whole 4 hour journey.

If you’re looking for new car seats Babydash is having a KAW-KAW promotion on car seats of different prices from the 2nd to 31st December 2019. There are some good discounts on a range of car seats, be sure to check it out.

8 Tips for Traveling Happily with Young Kids

road-trip
(c) NickMom

Pulling off a great family vacation with young kids takes some planning and timing. Here are eight tips for traveling happily with your family.

1. Remember to plan ahead

holiday-plan

Always plan ahead and make a list of what you want to do to minimize last minute bookings and sloppy packing that may add unnecessary stress during traveling time. Think about these: Local or overseas? Budget or extravagant? Drive or fly? This brings us to point 2.

2. It’s good to start small

It depends on how many kids you have and how young they are but we suggest you start small, i.e. somewhere near so that if anything goes wrong, you can still drive back home. A stay-cation in a nearby hotel with a family-friendly theme park sounds good. The next step, you can bring them on longer road trips to other local places of interest. When timing is right and your little people are more accustomed to traveling long distances, you can then plan for flying trips for overseas vacation.

3. Always pack light

A few tips:

  • When you pack your suitcase, use Ziploc bags to differentiate the types of clothing. This will minimize the need to rummage through the entire suitcase just to find one T-shirt or your kid’s socks or your bikini, etc.
  • If you need to bring a stroller, bring a compact stroller like the BABYZEN YOYO+. It fits just about anywhere, and will follow you on-board a plane as hand luggage. It can be folded up, unfolded, and steered with one hand.
  • If you are a seasoned babywearing parent, bring along your baby carrier as well. Babies and even toddlers love to be carried. Recommended baby carriers: Boba, Ergo Baby, Daiesu, Jumpsac. We will carry SNUGGbaby carriers very soon!
  • Pack an emergency bag (see point 4).

4. Keep an emergency bag within reach

Things to pack in this emergency bag include medicines, band-aids, snacks for both adults and kids (we highly recommend Organix Goodies), food pouches for babies, spill-proof water bottle, tissue paper, toilet rolls, wet wipes, garbage bags, toiletries, and activity packs for your kids. See point 5 about activity packs. Most importantly, keep them within reach all the time!

5. Prepare surprise activity packs for the kids

Kids are kids so they do get bored easily. Prepare surprise activity packs for the purpose of distraction and to keep them occupied for some peace and quiet time. What can be packed include fun snacks, Lego, toy cars, action figures, dolls, cartoon characters, art & craft, books, puzzles musical toys, electronic toys, stickers, you decide! The trick is, bring a mix of your kids’ favorites and throw in some new ones that they have never seen before or have always wanted. This variety will keep your kids engaged for longer periods of time.

6. Bring a good thermal food jar

If you’re bringing a baby under 18 months with you, it’s good to be able to cook his food because most restaurant food might not be suitable. For this purpose, bring a good thermal food jar that can you can use to cook on the go. You can buy raw food from nearby market if there’s one. We recommend Zojirushi thermal food jar. We have written a blog post about how to use the Zojirushi thermal food jar to cook on the go.

7. Make time for short breaks during long road trips

Stop the car after a few hours’ drive. The kids will be happy to have such short breaks where they can come out and play to release some pent-up energy after spending hours being cooped up in the car. Short breaks are useful – they can be toilet breaks, sightseeing breaks, tea-time breaks, basically any sort of breaks to curb boredom and minimize the chance of the kids becoming cranky and whiny.

8. Talk, laugh, sing together!

You may have done the best vacation planning in your life but what keeps the spirit up is when everyone is talking, laughing and singing together! Prepare a family-friendly song list and blast that radio loud. When the kids are happy, everything is fine. 🙂

Is Babywearing for You?

babywearing-art
(c) NorthernSunArtPrints / Etsy.com

Is babywearing for you?

To answer this question, let’s go through this mini checklist:

  1. Do you know about the benefits of babywearing?
  2. If you want to babywear, do you know what are ergonomic baby carriers?
  3. Do you know the different ergonomic baby carrier categories suitable for your baby’s age and size?
  4. Do you know the rules for safe babywearing?

Let’s go through one by one and then you can make your decision to babywear or not to babywear. 🙂

Benefits of babywearing

  1. Strengthens the bond between parent and baby
  2. Baby is generally calmer due to the closeness to her parent and her primal/survival needs are met
  3. Decreases risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
  4. Eases breastfeeding on the go
  5. Allows parent to be “hands-free” to do other things while taking care of baby
  6. Baby can “explore” the world within the safety and comfort of her parent’s body
  7. Fosters a close bond until toddlerhood

Ergonomic baby carriers

Ergonomic means the baby carrier should:

  • Provide proper support, i.e. natural seating position (M-shape), the recommended position for healthy hip development. Improper support can lead to hip issues, see diagram below:

baby-carrier-positioning

  • Does not put strain on your baby’s developing hips and spine

baby-carrier-positioning-2

In summary, non-ergonomic carriers are crotch carriers, narrow-based carriers, and hipseat carriers.

Ergonomic baby carriers categories

The diagram below explains six main recommended categories: woven wrap (WW), stretchy wrap (SW), ring sling (RS), pouch (P), soft-structured carrier (SSC) and Mei Tai (MT).

Potty training made easy

potty-training

Three tips

First of all, don’t make potty training a military regime. It can be fun, rewarding, and hopefully, stress-free to both toddler and parents. Really!

Secondly, understand that toddlers who have shown a general trend toward independence and an understanding of what it means to go to the bathroom like a grown-up are more likely to be go through the transition without too much struggle. This usually happens by 2-1/2 to 3 years old.

Thirdly, there are many potty training practices out there. We suggest that as parents, you should choose an approach that suits your toddler’s personality and your day-to-day routine without putting too much stress on both toddler and parents.

Signs of potty training readiness

Before starting on any approach, it’s recommended to look out for signs that your toddler is ready to take on potty training.

The signs below are from babycenter.com:

Physical signs

  • Is coordinated enough to walk, and even run, steadily
  • Urinates a fair amount at one time
  • Has regular, well-formed bowel movements at relatively predictable times
  • Has “dry” periods of at least two hours or during naps, which shows that his bladder muscles are developed enough to hold urine

Behavioral signs

  • Can sit down quietly in one position for two to five minutes
  • Can pull his pants up and down
  • Dislikes the feeling of wearing a wet or dirty diaper
  • Shows interest in others’ bathroom habits (wants to watch you go to the bathroom or wear underwear)
  • Gives a physical or verbal sign when he’s having a bowel movement such as grunting, squatting, or telling you
  • Demonstrates a desire for independence
  • Takes pride in his accomplishments
  • Isn’t resistant to learning to use the toilet
  • Is in a generally cooperative stage, not a negative or contrary one

Cognitive signs

  • Understands the physical signals that mean he has to go and can tell you before it happens or even hold it until he has time to get to the potty
  • Can follow simple instructions, such as “go get the toy”
  • Understands the value of putting things where they belong
  • Has words for urine and stool
