8 Tips for Traveling Happily with Young Kids

road-trip
(c) NickMom

Pulling off a great family vacation with young kids takes some planning and timing. Here are eight tips for traveling happily with your family.

1. Remember to plan ahead

holiday-plan

Always plan ahead and make a list of what you want to do to minimize last minute bookings and sloppy packing that may add unnecessary stress during traveling time. Think about these: Local or overseas? Budget or extravagant? Drive or fly? This brings us to point 2.

2. It’s good to start small

It depends on how many kids you have and how young they are but we suggest you start small, i.e. somewhere near so that if anything goes wrong, you can still drive back home. A stay-cation in a nearby hotel with a family-friendly theme park sounds good. The next step, you can bring them on longer road trips to other local places of interest. When timing is right and your little people are more accustomed to traveling long distances, you can then plan for flying trips for overseas vacation.

3. Always pack light

A few tips:

  • When you pack your suitcase, use Ziploc bags to differentiate the types of clothing. This will minimize the need to rummage through the entire suitcase just to find one T-shirt or your kid’s socks or your bikini, etc.
  • If you need to bring a stroller, bring a compact stroller like the BABYZEN YOYO+. It fits just about anywhere, and will follow you on-board a plane as hand luggage. It can be folded up, unfolded, and steered with one hand.
  • If you are a seasoned babywearing parent, bring along your baby carrier as well. Babies and even toddlers love to be carried. Recommended baby carriers: Boba, Ergo Baby, Daiesu, Jumpsac. We will carry SNUGGbaby carriers very soon!
  • Pack an emergency bag (see point 4).

4. Keep an emergency bag within reach

Things to pack in this emergency bag include medicines, band-aids, snacks for both adults and kids (we highly recommend Organix Goodies), food pouches for babies, spill-proof water bottle, tissue paper, toilet rolls, wet wipes, garbage bags, toiletries, and activity packs for your kids. See point 5 about activity packs. Most importantly, keep them within reach all the time!

5. Prepare surprise activity packs for the kids

Kids are kids so they do get bored easily. Prepare surprise activity packs for the purpose of distraction and to keep them occupied for some peace and quiet time. What can be packed include fun snacks, Lego, toy cars, action figures, dolls, cartoon characters, art & craft, books, puzzles musical toys, electronic toys, stickers, you decide! The trick is, bring a mix of your kids’ favorites and throw in some new ones that they have never seen before or have always wanted. This variety will keep your kids engaged for longer periods of time.

6. Bring a good thermal food jar

If you’re bringing a baby under 18 months with you, it’s good to be able to cook his food because most restaurant food might not be suitable. For this purpose, bring a good thermal food jar that can you can use to cook on the go. You can buy raw food from nearby market if there’s one. We recommend Zojirushi thermal food jar. We have written a blog post about how to use the Zojirushi thermal food jar to cook on the go.

7. Make time for short breaks during long road trips

Stop the car after a few hours’ drive. The kids will be happy to have such short breaks where they can come out and play to release some pent-up energy after spending hours being cooped up in the car. Short breaks are useful – they can be toilet breaks, sightseeing breaks, tea-time breaks, basically any sort of breaks to curb boredom and minimize the chance of the kids becoming cranky and whiny.

8. Talk, laugh, sing together!

You may have done the best vacation planning in your life but what keeps the spirit up is when everyone is talking, laughing and singing together! Prepare a family-friendly song list and blast that radio loud. When the kids are happy, everything is fine. 🙂

7 Tips to Master Perfect Baby Flat Lay Photos

flatlay-1
(c) tharasofian

Flat lay photos are the latest ‘in’ thing nowadays when you browse photo-based app such as Instagram. These photos look stunning, chic and classy. Trust us, it’s a great way to show off your favorites and current addiction – and in this case for us mommies and daddies – our adorable little ones! Don’t you agree?

Let’s follow these seven tips to master the perfect baby flat lay photos:

1. Use a white or suitable background (Quick tip: Use a white blanket/bed sheet/paper roll)

White is the most popular basic background. Its minimalist and fuss-free effect sets a very classic tone to your photo’s lay out.

2. Use natural day light (Quick tip: Take your photos near the window or any space with good natural lighting)

The best flat lay photos are taken in soft, natural day light. Try removing colorful or dark-colored objects around that may create unsightly shadows on your backdrop.

3. Dress up your baby (Quick tip: Choose a romper with cute prints and matching mittens and booties)

Your baby is the hero, i.e. focus of the photo so some thoughtful dressing up will score you excellent brownie points. Then, place your baby in the middle or on an angle towards a corner of the background that you’ve chosen.

4. Use baby-related props (Quick tip: Milestone cards, toys, plushies, teethers)

Yes, choose two or three of your baby’s favorite items and place them strategically on the background. But remember, less is more and your baby will stand out with fewer products surrounding him.

Have you seen these Smilestone ‘Milestone Baby Cards’ (45 Cards) on our website? A must-have for parents, these 45 milestone baby cards come in a solid, beautifully designed box to capture your baby’s growth and developments! You can buy these milestone baby cards here.

5. Neat is the key (Quick tip: Make space and don’t overlap your objects)

Yes, a neatly themed flat lay photo seems to attract more buzz than one that looks chaotic. So, just keep it simple and sweet. Again, less is more.

6. Shoot from above (Quick tip: Stand on a chair)

Just be careful with your balancing (don’t fall down!) and try to adjust your position so that you don’t block the natural light and create unwanted shadows in your photo.

7. Use a good camera phone (Quick tip: A camera phone with 8MP and above would do the trick just right)

Chuck the DSLR, well, you can still use it if you want to. But when it comes to babies, they may fuss if you’re taking too long to take your shots. So, a good camera phone will spare you from the agony.

Teething Hacks All Parents Should Know

teething_timeline.jpg

Teething timeline

When it comes to teething, there’s no hard and fast rule as to when and how your baby will start to teeth. However, generally speaking, here’s an estimated timeline (might not be applicable to some babies, so don’t panic):

  • Bottom two central incisors: 6-10 months
  • Top two central incisors: 8-12 months
  • Four top & bottom lateral incisors: 9-16 months
  • Four top & bottom canines: 16-23 months
  • Four first molars: 13-19 months
  • Four second molars: 23-33 months

Total: 20 baby teeth in the span of more or less 33 months (almost 3 years).

Wow… it takes almost three years to grow their gigi susu (milk teeth)!

Teething signs

Your baby might be facing some, if not all, of the following symptoms during teething (a tooth moves towards the gums and cuts through):

  • Chewing and gnawing own fingers and anything they put into their mouth
  • Drooling much more than usual
  • Irritable, cranky, clingy
  • Might wake up crying in the middle of the night
  • Mild fever (below 38°C) (Note: Some pediatricians rule this out)
  • Runnier poop than usual (not diarrhea)
  • Nappy rash
  • Drinking less milk and/or eating less solid food
  • Tender and swollen gums where a tooth is about to cut through

Please note that the symptoms above are just a general guideline and might not be applicable to some babies. If you’re unsure, always check with your pediatrician.

3. Teething biscuits

Teething biscuits are great for teething babies. These tasty treats will keep your baby occupied, bring your baby’s gums extra relief and help them practice chewing.

toothiepegs

You can also make your own teething biscuits / rusks if you like. Here’s a great article for your reference: Homemade Teething Biscuit Recipes.

4. Frozen teething fruits e.g. frozen bananas, apple rings, watermelon

These are great and easy to prepare and will soothe your baby’s gum in no time!

5. Breastmilk popsicles (momsicles)

Some mothers love doing these momsicles for their babies. Just add breastmilk to an ice tray and put a pacifier in each slot. Freeze these and when ready, you’ll have a handy frozen treat to help soothe your baby’s sore gums. Source: ANW Johnston
